Did you know that 1 in every 3 child brides in the world is from India?
The issues of child marriage and early motherhood have come in the way of millions of underprivileged young girls and their dreams. With the loss of livelihoods during the on-going crisis, this situation will only worsen as more young girls are married off at an early age to ease the family’s financial burden.
CRY is working tirelessly to address the issue by conducting online counselling sessions with adolescent girls, organizing home visits to high risk homes, building awareness on the ill-effects of child marriage among Panchayat leaders & VCPC members, tracking potential cases of impending child marriages and getting help from the police to stop them, connecting parents with MNREGA job opportunities and ensuring that girls are able to go back to school post the lockdown.
We cannot do the work that we do without your support and it’ll need each and every one of us to come together to ensure happier childhoods for children everywhere. Your contributions will help us ensure that India’s most marginalised children are able to continue their education instead of becoming child brides!
Here are some common questions that you might have. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, please write to us and we’ll be happy to address your query!
Rippan Kapur, our founder, started CRY with just Rs. 50. Today, we’re an organization that has impacted millions of children across India. But we could never have done this without YOU.
Every drop in the ocean counts. No matter how small you think your contribution may be, we assure you that it’ll make a big difference to children’s lives.
When you donate on a monthly basis, not only do you help us create a larger impact on the lives of children but also to plan our work at the grassroots level in a more efficient way. Auto-recurring monthly donations also help us reduce the costs incurred to reach out to you.
Child Rights and You UK is a registered charity (no. 1119026) as registered in England and so, all donations to CRY UK are tax deductible.
All you have to do is choose the amount that you’d like to donate, fill in your personal information as it helps us process your contribution and issue you a receipt and check all the information entered carefully. Then just choose your payment method and fill in the required details. You will get an immediate confirmation of your donation along with an email with a donation number.
Absolutely. We have stringent security measures in place to ensure that critically sensitive information, such as your personal information and your credit/debit card details, are protected. These measures include:
Gift Aid is one of the easiest ways to make your donation tax effective. It is simply a statement by a tax paying donor that they want the charity to reclaim the basic rate tax on your donation from the HMRC. This is a great way to add 25% to the value of your contribution to CRY UK at no extra cost to you!
For every £1 you donate to CRY UK in a financial year, you must have paid 25p in income or capital gains tax in the same financial year to qualify for Gift Aid. If you do not pay tax in the UK, you are not eligible for Gift Aid.
You know you’re a UK taxpayer If:
If any of these apply to you, please complete and return your declaration so CRY UK can reclaim the tax on your donation. NB Inheritance tax does not count as UK income or capital gains tax.
Basic tax rate is currently at 20%. Your donation of £1 is treated as net after tax from £1.25 (£1.25 minus 20% is £1).
You may still pay tax on a private pension plan or a savings account, or pay capital gains tax if you sell property or shares – and so, are eligible for Gift Aid.
CRY UK can only claim back the basic rate tax on your donation. As a higher rate taxpayer, if you declare your donations on your tax return, you can claim a rebate based on the difference between the higher rate and the basic rate when you fill in your self-assessment form. For example, if a higher rate taxpayer makes donations worth £100 over a year, on top of the £25 that CRY UK claims back directly, you can reclaim as much as £25 from HMRC.
If you pay a lower rate of tax,, CRY UK can still claim back 25p for each £1 you donate, provided you pay enough tax to cover the claim in the tax year you make the contribution.
If you normally make donations via CAF, tax has already been reclaimed. However, please fill in the declaration anyway so that any separate donations you might make are tax effective as well.
To simplify matters for both you and CRY UK, the declaration covers all contributions that you’ve made to CRY UK in the last four years; as long as you are eligible for Gift Aid.
You can cancel an existing Gift Aid Declaration at any time by notifying us. If your circumstances change and you no longer pay enough income or capital gains tax to cover the amount claimed by CRY UK, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. You can also write to us at:

No – we do not accept any cash donations in the interest of transparency and accountability
CRY India is an Indian non-profit organisation that was founded by Rippan Kapur in 1979 to ensure happier childhoods for India’s children.
CRY UK is an independent nonprofit organisation affiliated to CRY India but registered in the UK with its independent board of trustees. However, all the funds we raise are used for the benefit of underprivileged children in India.
We raise the funds that we need for our work with the help of kind individuals like you as well as through CSR grants by corporates and institutions.
Our rigorous selection process is based on the values of trust, transparency and accountability. We screen all the applications we receive, make a shortlist basis the robustness of the applicant’s current operations and number of years of experience and conduct a field visit to evaluate shortlisted applicants and extensively debate our findings internally. Those applicants who meet all our criteria are recommended for approval by our board of trustees.
We ensure that resources are optimally used by our project partners through regular budgeting and reporting systems aided by Account Aid, a firm of chartered accountants specialising in this sector. Our program teams visit each project on a quarterly basis and conduct meetings with the staff, parents, children and the community to assess the project’s progress. Every project is subject to an annual evaluation before we grant them the funds for next year.
As an NGO, we do not receive any direct government funding. However, the government has extended certain tax and duty exemptions to us to help us minimise our costs.
In order to achieve sustainable impact, we pool all the donations we receive and allocate them to the projects and programs we support instead of select individual children. This helps us ensure that there is no differentiation between the children and that your money is able to create long-term change for all children.
We believe that children are entitled to their privacy as well and we take their need for anonymity very seriously. However, while the names of children are withheld, we encourage you to visit our projects so that you can experience the impact your donation is being able to create!
Yes, our full-time employees are given regular salaries – we believe that this is important to attract the professional talent we need to manage our activities effectively. However, it is important to note that CRY salaries are very modest in comparison with commercial corporate organisations.
Yes, we do have external channel partners that help us raise funds through face-to-face marketing and tele-calling. Each such representative has an ID card with the CRY logo and office address and is authorized to collect donations through cheques/demand drafts/digital mediums only – never in cash.
If you’d like to reconfirm the authenticity of someone who has approached you on behalf of CRY, please contact us immediately.
CRY takes utmost care to process your donations as per the instructions given by you. Donations once made cannot be refunded by us since they’re immediately put to work for children in need.
However in case technical issues that may have occurred at your end while donating online, like a double debit or incorrect amount entered, we will process the refund if you bring the problem to our attention within 30 days of making the donation. Just send us a formal request for a refund, either to our office address or as an email to email@example.com, along with proof of deduction of the donation amount, a valid PAN number and a photocopy of your PAN card.
If you’ve already been issued a donation receipt, please ensure that you return the original receipt to our office address as well, for your donation refund to be processed.
We will respond to refund requests within 7 days, provided all the correct details are shared. Domestic refunds would take 10-12 days and international refunds would take 20-25 days – from the date of receipt of the request.
All donation refunds would only be made in the name of the person who has made the donation.
Please note that if your tax exemption certificate is already issued, we’d be unable to process your refund request unless it is asked for on the grounds of any error made on CRY’s part. In that case, we will refund the donation and bear the costs of the same.
